Six years ago, purchased a used travel trailer and took a year to gut/remodel it. Put a steel roof on top (we’re in Northern Michigan) and towed it to our off grid location. Put skirting on to keep rodents away, hooked up to solar and put in a well; it’s been the best investment we ever made. Everything you said was 🎯

I agree with my brother from another mother, Doc Eric. A travel trailer is better thab a RV. Not only in a SHTF situation but everyday too. Imagine you have a RV/mororhome. You're on your way out for vacation. It breaks down on the way. Well now you just lose your "hotel", travel vehicle and your vacation is ruined. With a travel trailer you can rent a vehicle that can pull yhe camper to either a campground nearby or go through with the vacation and pick up your vehicle on the way back. Also it doesn't have ro be a camper. If you can work with tools and with the help of UA-cam you may be able to convert an enclosed cargo trailer to a small camper for emergencies or even to camp out.

While I look at all the "prepping" sites and I have a caravan (It's what we call our living trailers in the UK) "bugging out" on this tiny island is not an option. So I have developed a fatalistic mindset and will probably stay at home or maybe join up with my son and form a small community of "capable" people who know how to do things!

I don't have one but I would favor the toy hauler style with the large rear door. Not only can you haul your toys but tools and materials also. And you could store big stuff in them too.

Most RVs of any class or price point are put together with minimum-quality components and labor that the company can get away with. Be prepared to learn how to fix things yourself because most RV service techs just aren't that bright, but they'll charge you readily enough. Never run your city water supply without a pressure regulator. Another huge drain on your batteries will be stove and the roof vent fans, and the furnace fan. If you plan to keep one for a long time look for models with a welded aluminum frame for the sidewalls and roof. Learn about the manufacturing process, too. Vacuum-bonded walls are much stronger and better insulated.

I already bugged out. No more city life. Too many problems in a city when shtf. I bought several property's that are 100% off the grid. No utilities on these properties. Bought a prefab cabin made by a company and did the interior myself. Insulated walls for winter/summer. Solar power with 12 volt outlets, as well as 120 volt outlets. 12 volt lighting with leds. Rv, water pump, instant rv hot water heater (propane powered) 1 gallon last about 2 months. 2 way every fridge. Propane and 120 volts. Propane camp stove uses 1# coleman ropane bottle. Have refill adapter to refill Coleman bottles.( buy solid brass, refill adapter, not plastic and brass refill adapter. They fail!) M1941 MULTI-FUEL TENT STOVE. 35, 000, btu output. Wood, coal, gasoline, or diesel fuel can be used if available. Although, liquid fuel prices are now insane. 5 gallons, only lasts a couple of days used frugally. But is is a possible source, to consider. If I must evacuate, I bought a very good tent, made by White Duck. It's a 10ft Regatta tent, which is very similar to the 10 man arctic tent used in our military. Has the stove jack in the tent and 1 center pole setup and guy ropes all around it. Easy enuf for one person to set up in 15 minutes. Very stable tent with good head room. Withstood 50mph, winds already. Made from 8oz duck canvas. Just like the 10 man arctic tent and 5 man arctic tent. That's kept in my car fronrapid evacuation with a new military cot and an aluminum table ready to go, with a dometic 3 way cooler fridge (RC-3000) gas, 12v/120v. 35 quart fridge and a champion duel fuel 2000 watt pure sign-wave, generator. One, Kyocera solar panel with waterproof charge controller for fridge

This was very good information but at 67 years old and being handicapped I can’t see bugging out in a camper. I do appreciate this info but I am stuck given my circumstances. Please keep up the good work.
